Ugly websites

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

I am not here to give you a list of websites that are ugly and indeed i’m not the best person to do that. i’m here to suggest you some beautiful sight of an ugly websites. As it has been discussed in many other forums, these websites may be the king-pin for online business. Amature simple looks, easy navigation and absense of fancy javascripts may increase the credibility of these website. I was in search of some support for my websites (which are undoubtedly the world’s ugliest sites, because i cannot create anything decent, oops!) and got few links.

Believe me, these people are saying that ugly sites made $10,000 a day from Google Adsense! Can’t believe? Ok, just check here.

You can also check out this post in flyteblog.com
And this one from SiteReference.com must have reached your mailbox already, and if not, here is the link

As it has been stated in that post, you may note the following points:

1) Ugly sells

2) Conveys trust

3) Easy to use

And finally a word of caution:

Ugliness By Application – Not By Rule

Little modification may i suggest, please read it like:

“ugliness by inability and not by rule ”

Cheers!

Flag march in Kolkata

Flag march in Kolkata

No it is neither a coup, not a civil war. As the Assembly election is going to be held on the 27th day of April, so, Para-military forces are kicking dust all along the city roads. People seem to be very much watchful this time though usual political chats are on.

EC has decided to depute additional polling personnel in case things get delayed and a welcome decision. And hopefully, they may finish it up well in time.

No posters no hoarding!

A visibly different Kolkata before the election days, as no wall posters are seen anywhere in the city. It is, ofcourse, much clean this time.

Where is my Bus?

Hey man, i am standing at this bus-stop since last half an hour, and no bus as yet! Where do they go?

Buses are in Captivity, under ECs control. Let you be delayed or fail to reach your destination. Who cares for whom? Atleast EC is not going to bother much.

Kolkata Votes

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

Kolkata will vote to select the members of West Bengal Legislative Assembly on the 27th day of April, 2006. Apart from Kolkata, two other districts of Bengal, North 24-Parganas and South 24-Parganas will also vote on the same day. This is the third of the five phased  Assembly election’ 2006 as per the order of Election Commission of India.

Lots of controversies this time: A few of the many =>

=> State Vs. Central Police Force:

That is exactly not the battle the two security forces fought out direct with each other. It was, rather, a policy conflict in which Central Force won and deployed in the state of West Bengal to maintain law and order during election days.

=> Bogus Voters!

Do not really know whether they are bogus or ghost or virtual voters, but there may be something like that.On the other hand, we see genuine voters to cry out for names being cut from Voters’ list.

=>So Many!

State average is nearly 76% and somewhere it reaches above 80 to 90%, and even 100% voting has been recorded in a booth already! People really loves to vote here.

Watch how Kolkata votes!

Neural Network - And Search Engines

Friday, April 21st, 2006

What is neural network?

We found the following definitions for neural network.

An interconnected assembly of simple processing elements, units or nodes, whose functionality is loosely based on the animal brain. The processing ability of the network is stored in the inter-unit connection strengths, or weights, obtained by a process of adaptation to, or learning from, a set of training patterns. Neural nets are used in bioinformatics to map data and make predictions.

A representation of a human brain similar in that both a brain and a neural network consist of input neurons gathering information from an external environment, synapses which interlace the input neurons’ information in complex but fairly predictable patterns, and output neurons which turn the patterns of the synapses into actions made on the external environment.

Neural networks are a form of multiprocessor computer system, with

simple processing elements
a high degree of interconnection
simple scalar messages
adaptive interaction between elements
See also An introduction to neural network
What we learn from the above definition:

It is evident from the definitions that it consists of a network of computers, that simply functions like our neurons. Neurons are, as you know, the building block of our nervous system.

Just like neuron, which composed of a Cell body, axons and dendrons - this network consists of three layers.

Basic Architechture:

Input layer - A set of networked PCs that take the input or requests

Hidden of Invisible Layer ( There may be more than one such layer)  - A set of networked PCs that processes the requests.

Output layer - A set of network PCs that generate the output.

Complexity of this Model:

Biological neurons work in tandem as whenever it receives an input (may be as many as 10,000 different inputs), it sends its output  to many other neurons. Neurons are wired up in a 3-dimensional pattern. And for obvious reason, our brains are much more complex than any artificial neural network so far considered.

Now what are the features of the neural network that makes it so very popular?

This network can adapt itself to the changing inputs to produce more accurate and relevant results. It acquires knowledge through learning. A neural network’s knowledge is stored within inter-neuron connection strengths known as synaptic weights.

The network need to be trained in order to produce the desired output, and once trained, it will adapt to produce desired output even when the inputs may have changed gradually.

Neural Network and Search Engines!

As the number of websites are increasing each day and the great varieties of requests that the searh engines of these days have to process, it becomes difficult to rely heavily on Google like “Scalable Algorithm” to generate most relevant search results. A scalable algorithm requires human intervention and modifications from time to time to produce the most relevant result. And here comes the concept of neural network. It wil train it self gradually to process a request ( mostly unorganised) to produce the most relevant result. that means, whenever, you type search words based on its previous training it  produces some result. if you are satisfied with the result , it will give it a higher weight. And if you are not satisfied with the result, it will try to understand from your inputs what you really want. Thay means, it will learn from your inputs like an expert human brain and adapt itself to meet your request as perfectly as possible.

Take a look at 20Q.net  It relates to a child game which is pretty simple. Think of a common object, and then answer a series of questions. It will  “guess” what you’re thinking about. Just check it out.

How Google looks at your website

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Google Top ranks, seems to be the most coveted target for most of the webpublishers. But it is not easy to get into the top for highly competitive keywords, unless and untill, you have really high Content reach webpages. Infact in Google Forum itself, i’ve seen people shouting for not getting indexed despite of having quality unique content in their webpages.

Here comes the story of SEO, and sadly enough, newbies can rarely get a position without a good knowledge of SEO. I really mean to say, SEO-ing is as important as the content of your webpages.

With so many “scalable algorithm” developed each day by Google & Co., it is very difficult to survive in the battle, and you are more likely to be commiting inadvertant mistake leading to penalise your site.

This is my real life experience, and believe me, i love to make small frequent changes in my website to produce some sort of variation, which propagates to all of my dynamically generated webpages ( Over one thousand) and now i know that it may penalise my site!

If you are not aware of the hidden dangers, just read these links ( plz. do not see, i’ve seen enough and now is the time to read) Wherefrom i got a great insight of how Google looks at my website.

1.This link tells you everything in nut-shell regarding Google’s views. It will kill your half-an-hour of valuable time, but deserves a thorough reading:SEO Theories.

2. The SEO Analyzer - a sophisticated algorithm that detects how optimized your web design is for search engines. The SEO Analyzer focuses on…. just check it out yourself, it is simply fantastic.

3. Page rank checker

4. This is not a tool but an article on how to choose keywords.

5. Not a tool, but an article again on SEO, which has been rated as the best by most of the visitors. Here is the link.

Need help

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

Internet seems to give us the biggest helpful community. People here stop fighting out and extend help and support each other. Oh! had it been the reality then warmonger would bite their nails. When i need help, i shout out and got result. In a local TV channel, they have shown, that a pregnant lady requested for helps through email and got thousands of responses! Yes, here everyone seems to be very much helpful. The more you shout, the more help you will get. And where not to shout. There are thousands of forums with great people having verified knowledge, 24Hours FREE online services, news-bulletin and sundry other place where you can raise your voice till it gets cracked. If one fails, go and shout at some other place. And i’m sure, they work pretty well and most of the time, you will get the reply on any subject. Only thing that would matter is that your fingers are expert enough to type the problem.

There is another interesting side of this story. Once you collect a piece of information, and tell it to others, people will deem you as a Pandit! So it is also an easy way to become an internet Pandit, nobody really challenges you face-to-face. Only thing, that matters most, is your courage!

Finally, from stone to strontium, whenever you need help on any subject, make a shout here. I’ll forward your shout in appropriate place in most of the times, but, there are certain areas where i can give you good tips.Guess what are those areas, i’ll not tell. Try to find it out yourself.
