h1, h2, h3 - Oh! no, no more SEO

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Wish we could have enough money to promote a site. It really takes time to build a good quality site and then updating it periodically but promotion is far too hectic and we have no option to try for optimising web Pages for search engines. So basic SEO knowledge is a must to have atleast some traffic for your website.

Technically it calls for more experience, observation and analysis to gain advantagesĀ  inĀ  search engine result pages. Today in course of my rountine browsing I got to review a site. The site, indexed in Google but not getting enough hits.

I checked for the page title and yes it was keyword stuffed, so no issue.

Then h1, h2 and h3 tags - and viola - the h1 was used to highlight a link text. There was no other h1, h2 or h3 tags used in that page.

I consider it as a mistake. A webpage should look like a newpaper front page. Some interesting text in the big font ( h1 - here) - called headlines. It will catch the eyes of the readers at a glance. Other parts should have legitimate sub headings. And finally some useful content - not those ‘blah, blah,,,lo.lo or foo, foe” stuff.

If you do not compete for too competitive keywords, you are sure to get some traffic. For competitive keywords, apart from onpage optimisation, you have to be a link-hunter ( No… do not confuse with link-trading ).

There are many other small tips that may give you some hits from search engines. Visit my blog to stay in touch with this tips.

Have a great Sunday.

Bye.

Affiliate or Adsense?

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

All of us need money. Don’t we? This is the market pressure that forces you to earn more to spend more and enjoy a decent living. A lot of people searches internet to find out online earning opportunities. I personally face a lot of questions regarding this from my friends and neighbors as well. They ask for advices or suggestions. They tend to look forward for instant result, and oh dear often ends up with frustration. But there are a lot of serious minded people as well who do believe in the old proverb: “Rome was not built in a day”.

It takes time dear, and you have to carry on atleast upto a certain mark.

I’m in a mood to tell you about two important channels of online earning - Affiliate Marketing and Adsense. Affiliate marketing means you have to place advertisers’ ‘banners’ or ‘text ads’ in your website and generally when a ‘Sale’ or ‘lead’ is generated you get commission. Adsense in that sense appears somehow easier as in case of Adsense you have to place Google Ads in your webpages and when someone clicks on that ‘Ad’, you get commission. You do not need to ‘Sale’ products to earn money from Adsense.
How to apply for Adsense?

How to apply for Affiliate Programs?

Click the link to apply for ShareASale.com affiliate programme.

Otherwise click this link to apply for CJ affiliate programs.

You must have a content rich web site in both the cases to get approval from concerned company.
Both ShareASale and CJ are two global advertising channels of affiliate marketing and you can find a lot of advertisers listed in their database wherefrom you can find relevant advertisers that matches your website theme.

Which one yields more?

Adsense supported websites, with so much restrictions for promotion, is not that easy to generate great revenue unless the site is flooded with traffic. You really need quality content, interesting features and lots..lots of quality traffic to earn revenues from Adsense. There are many websites that actually survive for Adsense.
On the other hand, affiliate sponsored websites have flexibility to promote. So, if you can concentrate on a target group and promote to reach that group, it may not be that much difficult to earn money from affiliate programs. Though I must agree - promoting affiliate sites call for creativity, and site must not be promotional but informative to convince the user about the products you are promoting.
So, my conclusion is that for the sites crowded with traffic already, adsense is the best option but otherwise, consider joining affiliate programs.

Goodluck.

Organising Your Web pages - Duplicate content - SEO

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

It may not be that much a difficult task to organize web pages of a website if it contains only few pages. Like a personal website containing few pages like Biography, My Photos or Contact Me. You are most likely to be satisfied with direct linking from the home page as it works both from the point of view of SEO and your visitors. But the same may not be true for large websites where contents are required to be organized rather carefully. It is typically called navigation structure. You have to make a plan for the most ideal navigation structure for your entire website at the very beginning. The basic idea is to club similar pages under one group(category) so that when visitors go to that group(Category), he/she can see a bunch of information at one place. The same visitor, when visits some other portion(group or category) of your website, may see a different types of similar pages clubbed together. Not clear?

Lets see how pages are organized in big websites like eBay or Amazon. You will see similar items are placed under one product category. Most of the time, to help visitors further, items are also clubbed under category/sub-category/sub-detailed-category like structure. It looks like a pyramid like structure overall and visitors know where to search for the specific products/items without guessing much.

Fact as stated above may not be new to most of us. But situations may arise when you need to place the same page under different categories.
BUT

And the big but is the duplicate content issue and modern days search engines. If you at all need to place the same page under different groups(categories), you need to disallow access of search engine robots to that portion of your website which may contain potentially duplicate content. As for example, apart from regular navigation structure, your website may show ‘latest’ or ‘popular’ web pages. If you find that two different links pointing to the same webpage in your website, you have no other option but to restrict access of bots for one particular section of your website.

Often robots.txt comes in handy and simply do a search to know more about how to restrict access of well behaved robots using robots.txt

Now the question comes which section should be restricted?

I think any other link to a web page in your website ( may be via ‘latest’ or ‘popular’ section or ‘RSS feeds’) , that is already accessible from your regular navigation structure, should be restricted from the access of robots to avoid content duplication threat.

Hope this clears some confusion.

Why HostingNote.com is different?

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

I had a terrific experience with web hosts during the second half of the last year. I have told it in different blog posts and different other places and this was the inspiration for developing HostingNote.com. I had the idea of developing a platform for building a healthy relationship between the hosts and the publishers which comes into reality in the form of HostingNote.com

The basic modus-operandi is simple. The web hosts, as usual, are supposed to add their hosting plans and publishers are supposed to review or rate hosting plans. And that is done with great accuracy in different other websites like findmyhosting.com ( Hats-off to them for the hard work they have done so far in keeping the content flawless!). But HostingNote.com does not end at this point. Rather it is just the beginning. The site is designed to provide different ways for interacting with the Hosting Companies direct in a neutral platform. I think this will be useful for everyone.
I know lots of young webmasters are absolutely clueless so far as hosting issues are concerned. HostingNote.com, to the best of my knowledge, will meet up their queries as well.

My sincere thanks to those hosts who have cared to add their hosting plans. You are welcome to contribute news, interviews and bulletins as well.

In fine, this will be my request to both the publishers/webmasters and the hosting companies to signup and contribute towards development of a friendly hosting community and please do not forget to tell your friends about this site.

Regards,

Sid
