That’s our way to celebrate victory! ICC Twenty20

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

24 Spetember, 2007 was a very special day for us. Kolkata has witnessed a prolonged session of rainfall due to depression that lasted for more than a day. The city was flooded, streets went under water, shops - mostly closed, and you could locate hardly any person - going out to attend offices. Schools, Colleges and every thing you can think of went under water. The city was virtually stranded. Water logged railway lines at Sealdah and Howrah Stations made it impossible to get that routine influx of crowd from nearby/remote outskirts - the city looked deserted, marooned and isolated.

As that Monday was special for another reason, India taking up against Pakistan at ICC World Twenty20 international final at J’berg, South Africa, so, most of the people decided to come back early from their offices to view the live telecast…and most of them actually could not go out on that day though for shear lack of transportation facilities.

The match started just in time, fans popped up in front of TV sets, nobody was visible outside - water logged roads only could see few street dogs - desperately  searching for a safer place. India batted and scored few runs which was not that much great. PAK bowlers really delivered their best and their fielding was fabulous. Yuvraj, Dhoni - nobody could penetrate the barrier put in front of them. However, Gambhir did play well to strengthen  the scorecard.

While Pakistan started to bat, and Sreesant in his second over gave away 20 vital runs in a low scoring match - it looked like, as if it was over for India. But that was not to be when Pathan hit the bell.. fans started shouting… so much twist in a single match … over-by-over and even ball-by-ball … and anybody could have won the battle.

But it was the day when Cricket God decided to favour India, and India won, Misbah, who was looking cool-headed to clear the boundaries in style, did an untimely mistake … slogging when it was not there, when it was not required… ,and the game was over for Pakistan.

India was declared the winner of the match…and you can’t guess the celebration party that went all through the night amidst water logged streets…Firecrackers, distribution of sweets, and crazy fans just did whatever they could have done to enjoy those unforgettable moments… the roads were still water logged…but fans did not mind paddling through waist-deep water…

I get my friend at ORKUT to say, “Just can’t imaging how did i manage those crackers..roads water logged… i stranded over the bridge holding umbrella  on one hand and crackers at the other…unforgettable moments…i have a real good story to share with my grandchildren..”

Share the story with the generations to come…share the moments of glory…that’s the spirit which has been producing some of the greatest cricketers of the world both from India and Pakistan over the decades.

Both played well, and Cricket won.

OK! THIS IS THE WEB PAGE CREATED BY AN INDIAN CRICKET FAN TO CELEBRATE INDIAN WIN IN ICC WORLD TWENTY20 CUP!

GoogleBot and Duplicate Content - How Google Helps You

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

So, I’m again back to my favorite topic - Google Bot which has at times put me into deep frustration and at some other time, simply delighted me with terrific search results. Now anyone who cares little bit for SEO may not be unaware that duplicate content has been a mojor concern oflate for your websites. I just checked out Google Official Blog to get an insight into what Google has to say about this burning topic recently. There are certain changes in their stand regarding use of url parameters - and that’s going in the right direction, and must be a great relief for webmasters who love to play with url parameters.

Surprisingly, Bots may consider your site to contain duplicate content even when you have actually not copied the content of someone else. It may also arise due to use of

  1. Session IDs to track your visitors
  2. Affiliate Tracking IDs
  3. Or any other url parameters

In each of the above cases you are pointing to the same physical file with different name,

like:

http://mydomain.com/

http://mydomain.com/sess_id=123456

and http://mydomain.com/sess_id=abcdef
are actually point to the same web page (http://mydomain.com/) . But bots consider it as three different pages, so, it is natural for them to index all the three versions of the page having the same content.

Now just see the index. All of the three versions of the same web page may have been indexed with great care and honesty.
http://mydomain.com/

http://mydomain.com/sess_id=123456

and http://mydomain.com/sess_id=abcdef
And how will the Bots interpret such pages? - Bots will consider that you are simply displaying (duplicating) the same content in different pages and may impose a penalty - and there is every possibility that your PR gets diluted - as the same IBLs ( Links pointing to your web page) may be distributed among all the three versions. So, this will in turn reduce your position in Search Engine Result Pages - a gross disaster for you!
But as told in that post - and the best part of it is the way Google Bot handles such url parameters, and seems to have somehow got rid of their earlier reservation regarding use of URL parameters…

It says:

  1. They will try to cluster the three(or more) different versions of the urls
  2. They will select the one they think as the “best” URL to represent the cluster.
  3. Then all properties of the urls are attributed to the representative one.

It appears more convincing and relaxing particularly considering the vast majority of websites using dynamic URL parameters. Also a point in this regard is worth mentioning . As stated in that post - “webmasters need not be overly concerned with the loss of link popularity or loss of PageRank due to duplication”
However, you can still help Google by:

  1. Submitting a sitemap
  2. keeping the URL as clean as possible.

There are few other recommendations particularly for the merchant sites, which you can read here!

So, I think there is enough reason to relax a little bit for the time being if the bot behaves as they claim it to do in that post.

MySpace Classified - Why not try it for traffic?

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

So, you have your mySpace account and have few friends and tried with posting bulletins - still you can’t just drag visitors to your sites - I think as a lot of mySpace members  are actually trying to get some traffic to their own website - it is not that easy to drive traffic to your website. If you offer something for free there are literally thousands others offering the same free stuff! If you want to sell some products, you need to do it tactfully - as they do not let you use your space for commercial purpose - and also you will get a lot of other members selling the same stuff as you are doing. MySpace appears to be producing some good returns for the music bands and that too if they are already a familiar name or they have implemented some special promotion strategy to get thousands of friends.

At times it looks like quite impossible to see space profiles flooded with friends - just wonder how do they manage time to get such a huge number of friends because they must have some activity other than making friendship requests at mySpace! Bots or automated scripts may somehow do the task for them. Otherwise, it just  compels my wonder.

Anyway I am in no way against having a profile with thousands of  friends - as you can simply take advantage of getting necessary exposure by posting relevant comments at such a crowded profile - and it works.

However, I would also like to give mySpace classified a try - why not use it for the purpose it is there- promoting your products or services! Oh! Just for the GPT lovers, the sad news is that you can not post your Referral links at mySpace! Better, you make a decent blog, make some high but realistic commitments regarding earning opportunities that your programs have - and then give some referral links at the bottom. I think promoting an informative blog using mySpace classified is not that difficult - just you can’t use the term : Get Paid To - over there. No problem! You must be clever enough to create a suitable alternative catch phrase!

But whatever the way you feel better, I think mySpace classified also deserves a try! A network with millions of visitors must be the best place where you should spend more time each day and if it allows you to promote your products - nothing is more delightful in the world than this small piece of dry information.

While using mySpace classified just do not repeat the same Ad, they have a fifteen days of interval restriction in between to Ad posting. So no other way but to wait for fifteen days before launching your next outright campaign to get some visitors to your website.

If it works, do not forget to share it with me - atleast tell it to me - as I have just told all that I could have about using mySpace for promotional purposes!

osCommerce - Edit CSS

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Like any modern day’s open-source projects, osCommerce also has one stylesheet that controls the display of links, texts and boxes. The location of css file is

/catalog/stylesheet.css

Important CSS Classes in that stylesheet file:

infoBoxHeading : To edit the style of box headings ( like box for displaying Categories, Manufacturers, Quick find etc. )

boxText : To edit the style of display text inside the boxes.

I’ll continue to update this post as and when I find other useful CSS Classes.

Thanks.

osCommerce - Editing Headers - logo

Once your shop is up and running - you need to change your header and footer.

Create your logo and upload it to /catalog/images directory.

Now open /catalog/includes/header.php

Find the text: oscommerce.gif

‘ . tep_image(DIR_WS_IMAGES . ‘oscommerce.gif’, STORE_NAME) . ‘‘; ?>

and replace it with your logo file name. Save changes.

That’s it.

osCommerce - Installation Guide

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

osCommerce, probably the most widely used freeware shopping cart solutions, is really easy to install.

Simply download necessary files from http://www.oscommerce.com/solutions/downloads

Unzip the archive and upload the catalog directory to the root of your webserver.

Once uploading is done, point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/catalog/

You will be entering into step-by-step installation process.

Before Installation:

Do not forget to create a mySQL database, with UserID and Password to access it. You need to supply them while installing the osCommerce.

Configurations.

osCommerce configuration settings are saved in two files:

1. for administrative access

/admin/includes/configure.php

2. for user-level access

/catalog/includes/configure.php

Once installation is finished, you can straightaway jump to your admin control panel for necessary configuration.

However, if you get database connection error: check your database settings in the above two files. This is a mere hint but it is likely to be very helpful for the beginners as well.

Feel free to contact me for further assistance.

Thanks.
