Top Ten Todo list for Webmasters

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Hi all, wish you all, the webmasters, are having a great time, particularly those in India - the festive season is on the card so must be getting very busy in planning for the festivals. Yet we can not simply do away with our routine tasks. So let me tell you a quick Todo list which will help you to achieve better success as a webmaster.

Look, whether you are in some online job, or, in some offline work, consistency is the key factor between your success and failure. So, if you are consistent in your effort depending upon your ability you are going to achieve success - may be today or tomorrow which is not that important. But how to plan for making your effort consistent? So, here is my quick todo list.

DAILY:

1.   Check mails - Answer Emails and clean out spams. Do not let customers query unattended. I feel guilty even if i could not answer to my friends Emails in time.  Queries are most of the time simple. So, why just keep them unattended only to lengthen your Todo list?

2.   Backup websites- It is the best practice to backup your websites frequently. Nobody wants to witness a sudden crash but nobody can deny its occurrence. So, if it happens it is you who will have to bear the loss. That is why experts smile gently and suggests - backup.
3.   Logs and Site Statistics including Adsense(or other) revenues - Do not forget to check raw access logs as well apart from checking highly formatted site statistics provided by different web counters. You can get an estimate of how much greedy the Bots are to consume your valuable bandwidth but you are mostly helpless. Also, you can get a good idea who is hot-linking to your Monalisa brand photos.  If your sites are flooded with traffic  you  will find  a good over view of  visitors  coming to your  websites - their country, city, time of visits, and miscellaneous  activities  in your website. But  hurry up  - do not spend too much time in watching logs. You need to do something to keep the traffic flow steady. Analyze your logs to chalk out new plans to be included in the ToDo lists to come.
4.   Fix small bugs that may have come to your notice. This is really very important. It may relate to an image that needs to be positioned correctly or some patches that is easy to solve.
5.   Look around web for ideas.
6.   Look for resources to add fresh content to your websites.

7.   Implement all the promotional plans you have drafted with so much enthusiasm. It is hard i know but you have to go on with a fixed promotional objective. Neither you should get carried away nor you should be too defensive. Just follow what you have chalked out to promote your sites. But like backup, promotion is very important and it must be done daily to get maximum returns.

8.   Write fresh content (newsletter) for your websites. Though I think lot of the webmasters do not like to add fresh content daily still it is better to try and add content to your website or blog, either daily or weekly.

9.    Socialize in the internet. Take part in forums, groups, chat rooms or the way you feel better. I think it is a much needed thing that must be there in the daily TODO list.

10.   Analyze your daily activity at the end of the day. Use self-designed spread-sheet to record specific data. Try to remember how much hours you have spent in appreciating a beautiful picture or viewing a Top Pick YouTube video. You will get a good guideline of what not to do the next day.

Weekly

1. Accounting,Payroll and taxes.

2. Check for Advertising stats
3. Use Different webmasters’ tools to  analyze your website better.

4. Modify the daily ToDo list for the next week.

5. Maintenance of PCs and Printers including Anti-virus, Adware / Spyware scan.

6. Hard copies of all documents and other file works.

Monthly

1. Review ToDo list for the month

2. Analyse progress

3. Frame new strategies and prepare a new daily Todo list.

4. Hard copies of all documents and other file works.
Hope it is a full-proof ToDo list for webmasters running small online business. If something is missing let me know.
